Requiem For A Sugar

November 20th, 2008

Yesterday I switched from insulin injections to pills. How did my blood sugar react? Well, the next time I measured it was 2.8. Two point frigging eight. That is by far the lowest it’s ever been. In fact it is too low. It’s not supposed to be under 4. So I had to grab something to eat right away.

Maybe it was so low because I had been out for a walk. Quite possibly the first walk I have ever done just for the exercise. Not to go shopping. Not stopping at the library. Not going out because there was snow and I wanted to enjoy the prettiness. Just walking for the sake of it. I feel so very healthy and morally upright. Walking for exercise, whodathunk it was possible.

Speaking of snow, the weather forecast says we might be getting some. It is almost winter now.

My blood sugar after taking the pills today have been in the low 4s.. So that’s good. Looks to me like pills will be okay. That I won’t need the insulin injections. The doc will be calling tomorrow at 10 to hear how it’s going. They were thinking that one pill might not be enough and that we might have to up the dosage. But looks like that won’t be necessary. I must say that I’m happy with how it’s going. I thought it was going to be so very hard. But I’m still eating well, starting to feel good enough to go out and get a little exercise. And my blood sugar levels have been 1 digit since I came home. I don’t think it’s been higher than 7 in quite a while. I am coping. I honestly had my doubts whether I would. But hey, I guess I was selling myself short.

Tomorrow is the playground christmas party. I must admit that I don’t feel much like going. It will be stresfull and there will be people. I feel like I have had enough stress and people lately. But I better go. I know it will be nice after all. I’ll make an effort. And skip desert. Hopefully Bodil will be there. I haven’t seen her in absolutely ages. Not since Mads died actually. So that’s a long time. It would be good to see her again. They’re all nice people at the playground, but she’s the one I feel most comfortable with. I hope I can get to sit next to her like I have the last two years. And that the night will go as well as those in general.

All for now.

The Devil Is In The Sugar

November 18th, 2008

Yesterday was my eye examination. It went okay. They didn’t say a whole lot. The results will be sent to the regular hospital (eye examination was in a different hospital) in 3-4 weeks. They gave me a normal sight test as well. And because of the blurred vision I only have 20-25% sight left. That’s not a lot. “Nope it isn’t” the nurse said. I wouldn’t be surprised if it qualifies me as being legally blind.

It left me feeling rather sad and depressed yesterday. The little devil inside tapped me on the shoulder and whispered in my ear “why would you want to live in a blurry world like that? They took away your sugar and now they’re going to take away your TV and computer, you won’t be able to see any of it. Why go through that when I can offer you eternal darkness and not a worry in the world?”. Damn you, devil. Damn you.

I’m feeling a bit better today, though. I had my appointment at the regular hospital. It went fine. I mentioned the blurry eyesight and the doctor didn’t seem too alarmed. It can happen. Hopefully it’ll get better. Hopefully. I hope. Also I’m going off the insulin injections. We’re going to try out pills instead. Starting tomorrow morning. So we’ll see how my blood sugar feels about that. I have my next appointment at the hospital next Wednesday. And they’re going to call me and ask how I’m doing on Friday. To see if I need to up the dosage of the pills or if I’m doing okay with just the one that I start off with.

They also had the results back from some of the tests they ran when I was admitted. And they all came back clean. I forget what it was all for, but that doesn’t matte ranymore. I “only” have diabetes. Oh and a little low on vitamin D. Apparently that’s a common thing in Denmark. We don’t get enough sun here. But the doc recommended some vitamins for me.

So that’s all swell and good. After the hospital I stopped at the playground. And finally got to see the goats again. So good.

Look at those sweet girls. How I miissed them. But wait! Do you see that tuft of white in the right hand corner? What? Who? How? When? Allow me to introduce…

buck

A new buck! I can’t properly introduce you since he doesn’t have a name yet. I thought about suggesting Rudolph, but I’m not sure his nose is red enough. He seemed very sweet and calm.

And sure liked to be scratched. All over. I’m sure we’ll be best of friends. And maybe Magnethe will be playing nice too, now.

Peekaboo! Why the long face, Magnethe?

Vanilje wants to lick the side of the blog.

And I managed to get all three goats in the same picture. That ain’t easy, let me tell you. A little bread helped, though. It was raining so we staid inside. Goats wouldn’t make very good mailmen that’s for sure. Once it started raining no mail would get delivered at all. And snow? No way, no how.

That was just what the doctor ordered. A little goat-time for the soul.
