Further Instructions

So I went back to the hospital today. And talked to a nurse and an anesthesiologist. We talked about the surgery and what was going to happen. And they asked some questions about my health. The anesthesiologist asked me how wide I could open my mouth. I thought that was borderline rude, but I guess they just want to make sure I can yawn big when I wake up after the operation. Anyway, my EKG and blood tests were all fine so we are good to go. Next Tuesday. A week from now exactly. So that is quite exciting and scary. They will replace my eye with one of those red cyborg ones that Terminators have. You know the kind. So that should be awesome.

No, but seriously. Hopefully it will go well and my eyesight will get better. The surgeon said there was a good chance that there would be some improvement. It’s going to take a while before I find out though. The first couple of days it will be even worse than “normal”. And for a while the eye will go from nearsighted to farsighted. While the silicone is in. I think. I’m still not too clear on the details, I just go with the flow. But for a while it might be hard to coordinate my eyes. The nurse said it could be up to three months before your eyesight settles again and you can tell what the results really are. So it won’t be all great right away. But hopefully I’ll see some kind of improvement after the first couple of weeks or the first month. I haven’t heard anything about the left eye yet, so I don’t know when we’ll get started on that.

But things are in motion. Now I have a week to relax and then I’ll be under the knife. I’m going to have to spend the night at my parents’ place afterwards, because they don’t want you to be alone after you’ve been completely anesthetized. So I probably won’t be able to update the blog until a day or two later. But I’ll try to get on and let you know if I’m okay as soon as I can. Because Plume cares.

After the hospital business I went to the playground. Had fun with the goat boys. They are a handful now. They are so big and their horns so long now. Alice told me that they had been terrorizing the place! Stealing kids’ lunches and chasing them around. Oh dear. I can tell too, it happened a couple of times that I was walking along and then bump! I had a pair of horns in the side of my leg. It’s fun as long as you’re the bigger one. But they’re going to be trouble when they are fully grown! Alice was mending the fence around the horse field next to the goat pen. When the fence is done the goats are going to go in there. Lots of space and grass and trees. And a fence to proteect the innocent children. So that should be ok.

There were some big news too. You’re not going to believe this. Magnethe isn’t pregnant after all! Oh my lord. How about that. I was starting to suspect it, because it’s been so long. But still. She’s huge! I guess she has just been enjoying the good life at the playground too much. And I guess her mood swings are just.. crazy goatiness. Or her trying to dominate the flock while there aren’t grown males around. But man oh man. She sure did pull a fast one on us. So that means no more goat kids for now. That’s too bad. But I still have Vanilje’s boys to play around with. And with all the eyesight stuff and surgeries and acupuncture and whatnots, it probably wasn’t the best time for new ones anyway. Not for me at least. I don’t know what Magnethe thinks about the matter. All I could get out of her was “mmm nice apple”. I guess that about says it all.

Surgery tips: if you feel sick at your stomach after the surgery and BEFORE you leave for home, tell them. They can give you an anti-nausea drug in your IV to make you feel better.

They don’t want you to get sick, so don’t just suck it up and say “I’m okay” and then barf! Also fill the prescription for whatever pain meds they give you on your way home or have your Dad get it after you’re home.

They also do not want you to have horrible pain. Again, please don’t try to be a perfect uncomplaining patient. In the US, after day surgery, they want you to eat & drink something light, go to the bathroom, and generally be okay before they release you.

If you don’t eat/drink/pee, you don’t leave the hospital!

Take something to get sick in on your way home. I’m not saying you will get sick, but having had 6 different surgeries, it is good to BE PREPARED!

After I found out they can give you an anti-nausea drug afterward, I do much, much better!

Also, please think about telling the playground people (or writing them a little note), that you won’t be at the playground for awhile. People care about you lots, Plume. And they will be worried if they don’t see or hear from you.

And don’t think you are a “big worrisome bother” by telling the playground people or us on-line. You are part of the playground group and that’s what people do in a group. They are there for each other in good times and scary times.

You were wondering about Kurt one time, I think when he wasn’t there at the playground. It’s the same thing. Maybe you couldn’t do anything for him, but you did let him know you were glad to see him when he was at the playground.

In fact, if you don’t tell them at the playground, you might even hurt their feelings a little bit! Yes, you might. If my friend was going to have surgery and didn’t tell me, I’d be upset! I would want to know even it was just to wish them luck, etc.

After all this advice (which you didn’t ask for), I think you will do fine. I’m glad there is still some hope of improvement. And my husband, goatzies, donkey girl, and I will all be thinking of you next week.

You have been through so much this past few months, it’s time for you to have some good things happen in your life!

Debster – Thanks for all the tips Deb. It all makes sense enough. I’m sure they’ll take good care of me. I remember the nurse saying something about thatI had to pee before they’d send me home. So that matches up ok. And I already told Alice at the playground that I’d be getting surgery. I just need to tell the goats too. I don’t want them to worry too much about me. Carefree, that’s how goats should be. But I’m sure all will go well.

hanne – Thanks for understanding. If the surgery is succesful I might just be on more often, fingers crossed.

katrine – Thank you kindly. I probably shouldn’t tell Magnethe that you laughed at her, you might have a big angry goat knocking on the door otherwise!

Well it’s good to know wherever you are in the world, you have to pee before they let you leave day surgery!
