The Tale Of Two Computers
I am Plume’s cautious optimism.
Continuing from where I left off yesterday…
The formatting of the drive went okay. And Windows started installing. And then up came the screen where you have to type in the activation code. And I thought to my self: “Okay, no problem. I have it right… hmm, where is it. Did I leave it in my other pants?”. I couldn’t seem to find it and it was getting dangerously close to 3 am. So I decided to go to bed and leave it for the next morning.
The next morning I continued my search. And could not find that little piece of damn paper with the activation code. Finally I turned the garbage can next to the computer upside down and looked through the garbage. And presto, there it was. I had thrown the code in the garbage can. What kind of moron throws his Windows activation code in the garbage can? Either a very stupid moron or some sort of performance artist trying to make a protest against Microsoft. And lemme tell you, I ain’t not artist I’m ain’t. Oh dear.
After typing in the code the installation continued. And seemed to work fine. Right until I had to activate my Windows online. Of course it said “That activation code is already in use”. Thanks for the informatiion Microsoft, I bloody well know it has already been used, I used it myself when I installed Windows the first time. But yeah. I’m gonna have to call Microsoft to get my Windows validated I guess. The funny thing is that if I was a mean software pirate then I could probably find the code by googling for 5 minutes. But it’s always the honest do-gooders who have to suffer. Like anti-piracy stuff on CDs or games. The pirates just get patches or code-free versions. The only people who are troubled by these anti-piracy measures are the ones who actually buy the stuff legally.
Bloody herr. But enough ranting. I wonder if Microsoft thought about social phobic people when they thought up the “call Microsoft” solution? Thankfully I am now at a place where I am able to pick up the phone and make the call. If it had been 5 years ago then I would have probably gone out and bought a new Windows CD just to avoid it. But anyhoo. The reason I haven’t called Microsoft yet is because there are two big questions remaining.
Question the first: “What the hell happened?”. Why did the hard drive stop working?
Question the second: “Will it happen again”. And that’s the big dipper. Do I move all my old files back from my new old new computer. Sorry, I’m getting confused. Seems like the only thing I have been doing the past week is moving files back and forth, moving internet connections back and forth. Installing and reinstalling. But yes, the question is… do I carry on and hope everything will be okay? The new computer seems to be running okay now. I installed Oblivion and went for a walk in the forest. Beautiful game. It made me positively happy when the setup examined my computer and determined that I should play with the “high quality” setting. Mmm, that’s sexy computing. And again, everything seemed to be working fine. So do I pretend nothing happened? If the drive is going to fail then I’d rather know right now so I can send it out for repairs. I don’t want it to fail a week from now. I don’t want to call Microsoft and get my Windows activated and then have to do it all again for the third time in a week.
Sigh. I guess I’ll hold off for a couple of days. See what happens. And hope for the best. Keep your fingers crossed.
Tomorrow my parents will be back from Russia. I am a little divided over the subject. On one hand it will be nice to have some company again. The computer situation sort of blew me out of the water, rendered me depressed and apathetic and alone. So it will be good to have others around. On the other hand I love the peace and quiet and it’s not always peaceful and quiet when they are around. Also there is only one week left of my vacation and that will probably make me sad if I think too much about it. The easy way out is always so seductive. There is always the division. Wanting to hide away yet not wanting to be alone.
I gotta get the printer installed too. So I can get on with the playground exhibition. The box has been standing there on the floor ever since I picked it up at the post office. What’s the point in even unpacking it if the computer won’t work? I guess I could always hook it up to the old computer and print out from there.
I am running CHKDSK and it’s going very slowly. But that’s just because it’s a big hard drive right? 300 gb. Only natural that it will take a while. It’s not because there’s anything wrong. Nope, it certainly is not. Everything will be okay.
Tomorrow I’ll go hang out with the goats and everything will be fine. For a while. Did I mention I ran into Jannie yesterday? At the playground. She had fed the animals early in the morning before going to work. And then after work she came back so she could let them out for some fresh air. That was when I was there. And she asked if I could take her shift next Saturday. Because she’d be working again. And I was happy to of course. She is very kind and sweet, I like to help her out. And I like to feed the animals. So that’s all good. It’s funny, I live 5 minutes away from Jannie. I have done so for what, 20 years or so. And we practically never talked. Never knew each other. We’re around the same age. But she wasn’t part of the group that I played and hung out with. For 20 years you live right next door to someone without knowing them. It’s so random. One day you just discover you have something in common. It’s a funny old life.
Haha.

I’m glad the computer is up and running I wouldn’t trust it with files yet. Tell it, it is on probation and if it blows it again it will never get it’s own files. And then pet it on it’s little computer head and say please work. It was the sun spots that threw the activation code in the trash – huh Deb? Dang sun spots! I hope the CHKDSK goes good – it will. Good luck Plume!

Yes, that’s right! Plume was under the control of solar flares when the activation code went into the trash can!
Seriously now, it always seemed like when the tv would get odd channels or the radio went haywire or cell phones would do strange things, I’d ask my Dad – “So any big solar flares/sun spots going on?” And he’d say: “Well, as a matter of fact, yes!” All that electrical energy at the sun does affect things here. (Besides having something to blame for any problems going on.)
