The Deep Sleep Of The Innocents

(google cache)

Today I tried to help my brother with his computer again. And again I wasn’t really able to. But turns out it doesn’t matter that much after all. He wants to buy a new one. So he’s using this as an excuse. I told him I’d be willing to buy his old one. And then a little later on we were at my parents’ place and talking to my dad about it, and he said that my brother should just give me the old computer. As thanks for all the computer help I have given. So that’s how it turned out. I’m getting the old one and my brother is buying a new one. It’s a laptop, by the way. That’s why I offered to buy it. To be honest it’s really not worth much. By computer terms it’s ancient and it hasn’t been treated too good over the years. And I don’t actually have anything to use it for. But now that I’m getting it for free I certainly won’t complain. Now I’ll have a laptop to play around with. If I reinstall Windows and brush off the worst cigarette ashes then maybe I can have some fun with it.

Even later in the day my brother called me and told me that he had bought a new one. Only problem is that it has a wireless networking card. And his cable modem isn’t wireless. I had told him to make sure that he could use the card with his internet and I guess the shop clerk sold him a home network solution too, or something like that. And I’m probably going to have to set it all up. I have no experience with wireless networks. And his new laptop comes with Vista. Agh. So that’ll be fun for me to try to figure out while not being able to see anything yes. Bah. But I’ll do my best, because I do like to help out my family when I can. I told him that I wouldn’t be able to look at it before Thursday, since I have cataracts exam tomorrow. He said that he’d get dad to look at it. So maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll figure it all out by themselves. My dad isn’t very skilled at computer stuff, though. So I’m not counting on it. You know, I still have to go program their VCR for them so a wireless network might be a little much…

After the family business I went to the playground for some goat business. The boys are getting so big! They are now able to jump straight up on the bench. So there is no escape from them. Not that I want to escape. They are a joy. I made a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWomlQzW4kg. I like when they baah right up next to the camera. Sweet sounds.

When I was leaving Per came over and asked if I’d been taking some nice photos. They’d like some prints of the boys. So I’ll try to pick out some decent ones.

In other news, we have entered March. And you all know what that means. Only 9 months till christmas! And also, my birthday is coming up. March 15th. This year I wish for: A Mercedes, a bazooka and world peace. So get started on that, please. But seriously, as always I’d love a birthday card or just a regular postcard for my collection. Would make me quite happy. After I put up the “no ads please” sign I have been getting a lot less mail. My address is here so feel free to bombard me. Don’t worry, I will only remind you oh say 15 times more.

So tomorrow is the cataracts exam. At 9:15. I’ll have to get up early. And it’s going to last 3-4 hours. Most of which will probably be waiting. I hate waiting rooms. And eye exams. Eyeballs were not meant to be poked and prodded. But it will be nice to get it over with and hear what they have to say.

Fingers crossed for the best.

One birthday postcard from Oxford, coming up! In fact, your birthday falls just before I leave Oxford for Easter vacation, so I could actually send you a belated birthday postcard from Bergen (Norway) where I will be spending the vacation. I’m actually moving there after I finish my degree, because my fiance (not the diaryland guy, someone I met in college almost five years ago now) is working on his PhD there. Oh! Also, I am going to Copenhagen with him at the end of the Easter vacation, because he’s giving a paper at a linguistics conference there.

So, we’ll be neighbors, or at least in the same part of the world. :)

I’m sending you good karma for tomorrow, here’s to the best possible outcome,

Cheers!

Magnethe has wooly pom poms on the ends of her horns. The boys are sure growing up fast. They must think you are some kind of mountain they must climb when you come to visit.

We all went out for walkies this afternoon. It was cool and a bit windy, but not unbearable. No head butting, no biting, no chasing…everyone was good today. And the goats and donkey were acting nicely as well! hee, hee

I think our rechargeable cordless phones here at home need new batteries. So over the weekend I found the instruction manual to see what kind/size of batteries they need. I wrote it down and we bought batteries on Monday.

Never trust an instruction manual. The batteries the phones use are NOT the ones the manual said to get! So I take the actual phone with battery to the store to get the right kind and returned the two wrong ones.

Of course, NO batteries in the size I want. So when we go to work tomorrow, I’ll take the phone and battery with me again and we’ll try someplace else. Hope the phones hold out another day!

Isn’t so nice to read that your friend Valja is very close to your part of the world. Debster and I live very far away in the States, but then thank goodness for computers!

Have you ever though about getting a Mac Power book? My sister bought one and she loves it. I’m so used to a regular desktop computer but I’ve been leaning towards a laptop.

My computer is like your brother’s–very ancient. And I’m waiting for W7 to come out. I refuse, refuse, refuse to deal with Vista!

No one I know uses it and the ones who do hate it. I’m still using XP which is fine by me. I’ve NEVER had any problems with it.

But I have heard some ominous news about W7 as well. I’m hoping they get all the bugs out before they’re sold. If not, I’ll continue using XP.

My mother had cataract surgery last year and now she has better eyesight than me!! So I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you tomorrow. She said the laser procedure didn’t hurt–it’s like having some sand in your eyes for a few hours.

Really?? I didn’t know it was your birthday this month.

I guess Luis better hit the stores this weekend.

As for the Mercedes, if Debster and I and your other friends don’t get one as well, my friend Plume will have to settle for a photo of one just like the rest of us. :)

Valja – I shall look forward to the card, thank you very much! I hope you’ll have a nice vacation. I hear Norway is lovely this time of year. Of course I hear that mainly from Norwegians, but I’m sure it still holds true.
See you round, neighbour!

Debster – Hehe, yes it looks like the wool is growing out of her horns, not just her fur. I guess it’s all that scratching she does. The wool gathers up on her horns. Very fashionable.
Good luck with the phones. Do you have a battery barn nearby? No wait, that’s pottery barn I’m thinking of. I don’t think pottery will help you. Sorry.

LuisLemmings – You should all move to Denmark. I’m sure you could have a mattress and blanket out in the goat house.
I have been a PC guy all my life. I don’t think I want to try crossing over. I am definitely going to stay with regular desktop PCs. But it will be fun to have a laptop to play around with anyway. And i’m staying with XP as long as I can, no doubt about that.
I’m going to look pretty silly riding a photo of a Mercedes around town.
