The Fully Airconditioned Sound Of Speed

Well, I am still here. I can still use the computer, in some small degree. To be honest I am a little surprised. I had expected that I would be cut off by now. But my central vision seems to not have gotten worse for a few days. It has been stuck at “completely horrible” instead of going to “gone”.

But it is very bad. It takes a long time and effort to read anything. Sometimes I just have to give up. I have given up on facebook for example. I miss reading people’s status updates, but I just can’t do it anymore. So it goes.

But my central vision hasn’t changed, so I’m just happy about that. I’m not sure if the blindness is still spreading or not. It’s hard to tell. But I’m almost getting used to looking out the side of my left eye. Navigating by peripheral vision. I’m pretty much blind when looking straight ahead.

I still havem’t got my cane. The lady from the sight central was sick. So we have rescheduled. Tuesday and Thursday, not next week but the week after. So then I’ll get my cane and some training. That should be good. I think I need it now. I had a nasty little fall on Thursday. I was at the playground. My dad helped me get up there. And I had a smashing time with the goats of cours. Then I wanted to get home on my own. And I walked into this cement block thing that it supposed to prevent bikes and motorcycles from speeding through the playground and endangering kids and animals. This time I was the endangered one. But at least I managed to block the fall with my hands, so I didn’t smash my head into the pavement. I ended up with some bruises and scrapes on my shins. Nothing serious, but not funy either. It was hard in the bus too. I think I am pretty much done walking outside on my own. Even when I get the cane. I think. My dad is always happy to help me get around, so that’ll probably be how we do it from now on. Maybe when I get to feel comfortable with the cane I can try on my own a little. We’ll see.

Other than that there is not a lot new going on. I have kept up the exercise biking. I’m trying to do it two times a day. Although I have had to downgrade to once a day the past two days, because my legs are sore. The fall didn’t help either. But I’m keeping it up well I think. I like doing it. I’ll put on a Craig Ferguson show and listen to that while I bike. It’s better than lying in bed all day. It’s amazing how much time I have now that I don’t use the computer and can barely go outside. Exercising kills some time, so that’s good.

Next week I have another checkup at the hospital. They will look at my eyes and say that there is nothing new and they don’t know why the blindness has spread to my central vision. And so it goes. Still 3-4 months until the oil comes out of my eyes. It’ll be interesting to see if that makes any difference to things. All we can do is hope.

All in all I think I’m doing okay. I’m keeping my spirits up still. Staving off the panic. Working on the things I can work on and accepting the things I can’t change and trying not to get depressed. What else can you do really.

Finally a congratulations to Caroline Wozniacki, who will be playing the US Open final in tennis tonight. The first danish female ever in a Grand Slam final. Could be the first Dane to ever win one. She’s only 19, it’s not often we get sport talents of that calibre in Denmark. I don’t care that much about tennis, but I’ll be rooting for her. I wonder if tennis on the radio is any fun?

See you all soon, eyes willing.

Get your hands on some audiobooks (I recommend Terry Pratchett!), I’m sure they’ll have them at the library, and your dad can pick them up and deliver them for you there if you don’t feel like doing that yourself.

Here is a great audio-book online, William Gibson reads his Neuromancer novell.

Who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy it. I think they are mp3 files. You’ll figure it out.

I was worried about yr facebook goodbye, &didn’t think to come on the blog *fail*.
But I love excercise biking, do you do it to music?
    Love you.

Hej! I am glad to know that you’re still able to use the computer a bit. Sorry to hear about your fall, though. You’re doing an amazing job of staying positive. :) Thinking of you, hoping for the best, and sending lots of *HUGS*

atrine – Yes, audio books are in my thouhts. I’m not quite ready for them though, I think. I still can’t concentrate on them. But at some point my hunger for reading somethng new will make me go ahead and get some, I imagine.
Ann T. Krist – I read Neuromancer last year, before my sight gave out. So when I start looking for audio books I don’t think ‘ll be doing that one. But thanks for the suggestion.

Clare I miss reading your updates on facebook. Just can’t do it anymore. But I hope you’re doing well.I used to listen to music while biking, but I find that I need something to concentrate more on. I get bored when biking. I usually bike in the morning and evening. In the morning there’s a radio show I listen to. They play music too. Today they played Bohemian Rhapsody. I rocked out on my bike to that. In the evening I put on Craig Ferguson. american talkshow. I get less bored when there’s something to actually listen to, talking I mean.

Valja – I’m doing my best to stay positive. Thank you for hlelping with that

Fall is approaching. It’s official – Billy is changing colors with the seasons. His hair above his nose is getting brown and so is up further between his eyes. His legs are getting darker as well.

He’s such a sweet goat when he eats apples. He wants me to hold them and then he gazes into my eyes. (He knows I’m a sucker for that eye-gazing thing.)

Snickers has calmed down and has been a fairly good donkey lately. Hope she stays that way for awhile.

Good to hear from you as always. Hope you will continue to be able to update us every now and then. We think of you often.

Debster – You should have a little fashion show. “Here is Billy, sporting this falls’ fashionable colours”.
Magnethe isn’t very sweet when I feed her apple. She likes me to hold them as well, but she gets so eager that she practically eats my hand.

Hanne – Good to hear from you again. I was thinking of emailing you to see if everything was ok. I hope the life stuff is going alright.
I’ll see what the sight central people can do to help me, but if their stuff doesn’t work out then I’m sure I could use some help, thank you. Take care too.

Life is going more then allright. I met the man i want to spend the rest of my life with and im much in love. spent last week in Barcelona with him and it was great. And yesterday my psych told me i can close therapy in 8 weeks if nothing changes “cant make you better then good”. (have you ever tried EMDR? weird shit, but it works)
How things can change eh :) thanx for caring and that it matters how im doing!
The sight central should be able to help you yes.. i hope they ll inform you well about all the possibilities… and else you know how to reach me yes.

  10. Plume Says:

Hanne – Wow! That’s so great to hear. I’m very happy for you! So is he from Barcelona or did you just take a trip there or what? Thats just wonderful. You deserve to be happy.

My advice is: don’t forget if you have three goats and a donkey – how much darned hay they will need to eat over the winter!

We just unloaded bales and bales of hay for the goatzies and Snickers. Still have some to get off the wagon…pant…pant…pant. We covered it up with a tarp till we get to it on Sat. Then it is supposed to rain for the next 6 days, so we need to get it put away before the rain.

I have been plagued by allergies this week, some of it from fresh hay! The crops will be coming out soon, so that will be more dust and sneezy stuff in the air.

I just love the fall harvest season! Think of me fondly with hay stuck in my hair!
