Happiness and Sadness

The blog is a little late. It’s been a big week. With happiness and sadnes.

Mia had babies. A boy and a girl. On Wednesday. I got the news too late for me to get there, so Thursday was my first time seeing them. Two sweet little things. The girl all white, the boy white with a marking on one side of the face. Like a half Mia. And a spot on top.

Unfortunately the little girl did not survive. I was told she’d been drinking fine the first day. But she didn’t manage to drink at all I think on Thursday. I had a very bad feeling about it. Bodil later told me that she had known too. I think there was something wrong internally. I don’t know. Apparently Alice took her home to try and bottlefeed her. But it wasn’t enough.

It’s hard to write about. I only knew her for a day, but that’s enough of course. I held her in my arms to comfort her when she was bleating. I hoped it was for attention, because she would stop when Mia fussed over her or when I picked her up. But now I think it was because something was wrong.
It’s just very sad. I’m glad Bodil came by. We had a long talk about life and death. She understands. I don’t think I could have had a talk like that with anyone else.

Good thing there is still a lovely, little boy to take care of and love. Mia is focusing all her energy on him. And I am too, I guess. It’s hard not to smile at a silly little goat kid. Two days old he was already jumping around like a little goofball. Three days old he started chewing on hay. Dennis told Bodil that he had tried to jump up on Mia’s back to go for a ride too. He’s quickly learning the goat ways.

Palle is a little annoyed with this turn of events I think. Standing outside, bleating loudly because he wasn’t allowed in. Curious about what was going on inside. And indignant over not being Mia’s number one priority all of a sudden. He even managed to break in while we were getting some hay for Mia. So he met the little new boy. And started pushing him around. So i had to hold him back. I think he’s gotten so used to butting heads with Bruce and Clark, who are challenging him a lot these days, so he wanted to put the little new one in its place right away. I’m sure they’ll get along better soon enough.

But it’s been a long week. No more writing now. Let’s go to the photos. First one of me holding the baby girl. Mia Junior, I’ve been calling her. Since she never got a name.

Rest in peace little one.

And just so we don’t forget Mio’s boys…

And goatlogs. First one from Monday with much duelling in the pen.

And then from the rest of the week, with the new arrivals.

And that’s all for this week, folks. Much more in the next one.

So sorry to hear about the baby goat. They are all just so sweet and we want them all to grow up. Even though we didn’t know her for very long, we will miss her. I am glad you were with her while she was here.

It’s very sad. But happily the little boy is coming along amazingly. It’s hard not to be happy around him. He’s absolutely incredible. Look forward to the videos!
Hope all is well with you guys.

Yes, we are fine. It is SNOWING again right now. We are to get 6 to 9 inches of snow by Thursday morning. Then we have chances for more snow over the weekend. I am tired of snow this winter.

I put the hay inside the shed tonight along with some warm water for the goatzies and donkey. They were happy not to be outside eating their supper tonight.

The hummingbirds are starting their migration back to the US. There have been sightings in Florida and Louisianna. I am so excited! Even though they won’t be in our area till near the end of April, it means spring is on the way.

That’s what I keep telling myself anyway as I watch the snow cover up the bare ground. We have had many wild bird visitors come to the feeder lately. Even Mr. Squirrel has stayed around here this winter.

Our murderous cat, Gracie thought Mr. Squirrel was looking pretty tasty as she tried chasing him up the tree. He was much faster than she was and had no trouble getting away from her. She did capture a rabbit and ate it the other morning. Stupid cat.

My husband thought Mr. Squirrel was looking really plump and tasty, too. I said no way was Mr. S going into the slow cooker! I don’t really like the taste of wild game anyway although I have tried squirrel and rabbit when I was younger. Deer meat is okay sometimes, but I like chicken, pork, and beef the best.

We had snow too. But it only lasted a few hours. We’re lucky I guess. I think it’s getting warmer now. Hope you guys will be getting spring soon too! Run little squirrel, run like the wind!
