Happy Birds Day

Another year older and deeper in debt. Although only in the form of karma, I suppose.

My birthday was Thursday. 34. I know, I can’t hardly believe it either etc. Time flies when you’re doing the stuff I’m doing. Like a river it flows, where it goes nobody knows.

I had a really nice birthday. I went up to the playground and spent time with the goats. Five goats, that’s literally a handful. The new buck still doesn’t really seem to be taking charge of things. I did see him sniffing a little at the new girl, but other than that it was just mostly a whole lot of everyone chasing everyone around. I don’t know how we’re going to get any goat babies out of that, but it sure is fun for me to sit and watch. Time spent with goats is always time well spent.

Afterwards I went to the old house and had dinner with the parents. Mama made soup, and you know that makes me happy. Last soup of the winter season. A perfect present for my tummy. I still have enough leftovers in the fridge for one more dinnertime. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

The company of goats and family and then friends on Facebook. That’s enough to make me happy. I’m a simple man with simple needs. To put it simply.

Beware the ides of me.

Sounds like a perfect birthday to me. Soup, family, and goats (not neccesarily in that order) would make for a great time any day.

We’ve been letting the animals out in the yard to graze and they are sure enjoying it. The grass is finally greening up for them. Hay is okay, but fresh tender new grass is the greatest!

You’re not on Daylight Savings Time yet, are you? We went on it last Sunday and the days seem so much longer.

We even worked outside this past week – in March! Next week is supposed to be rainy, but we have some inside work scheduled to do.

Goatzies won’t like the rainy days at all, but it will make the grass grow and they like that!

I was just reading an excerpt from “Moominland in Winter” on amazon.com.

You’re a big Moomintroll fan, aren’t you? I didn’t know they were in English.

Debster – Not bad at all. I got my wish. Soup and goats.
No daylight savings yet here. Can’t be long though. I wonder what the goats think about that, do they feel like they lose an hour’s worth of sleep too?!
I am a big fan of the Moomins. There’s a sense of magic about them. Maybe it’s the childhood memories, but it’s special to me.
On my birthday, when I was going from the playground to my parents a cat came out of the bushes. I thought perhaps it was Moomincat. With my eyesight it was impossible to tell, it just ran across the path and into some other bushes. But I’d like to think Moomincat is still running around somewhere in Ryhaven. I wonder if he has found someone else’s window to climb in through..

Should have been “Moominland Midwinter” – I can’t even get English right! How many of these books are there? Do you have a favorite one?

Maybe when our work picks up, I will have to see about ordering something from the Moominland books. Do you have any suggestions?

  5. Plume Says:

Debster – I’m not sure how many books there. Of the original series I don’t think there are that many.. 4-5-6 maybe? And then she made several other spinoff/picture books etc.
If I had to recommend one it would probably be the midwinter one. I have very fond memories of that one. The Moomins wake up from their hibernation but their whole world is still snowed in. I just found that so magical when I was a kid. Loving snow and all. Such a beautiful idea. There’s also a part in the book about a creature walking around that if you look at you will freeze to death. I found that extremely spooky but also quite sad when you find out more… but that’s probably the one I have best memories of. Also the one where a comet is coming and threatens to destroy their world, that was another one that made a big impression on me.
I guess they’re still considered children books, but I did enjoy rereading them as an adult.
Don’t I still owe you books? I don’t even remember, but I think I do. So if you want some Moominbooks, or other books, just let me know.

  6. Debster Says:

Oh, I kinda forgot about that! Yes, I’d like to read the “Midwinter” one and the “Comet” one. Is there a minimum dollar amount for free shipping from where you order books? Two books would be fine unless you need another one for free shipping. That would be great!

I love kids or young adult books and have re-read some of them from the library last year. Harry Potter, Anne of Green Gables, The Wind in the Willows, Peter Rabbit – I like talking animals as you can tell! (Of course, animals really do talk, so that’s not such a reach for me.) Hee, hee

It looks like it hasn’t been that long ago that the Moominland books were translated in English. I found the “Midwinter” one listed on some of the book sites I like to read online and knew you had mentioned them in the past.

I’ve been reading lots of “Nordic Noir” type books – from authors in Sweden, Iceland, etc. They are mainly detective/police thrillers (which I like mysteries), but I’d like to read some young people books as well to get the whole “Nordic” experience.

I’ve also read some Irish and British authors, too. I have a variety of interests – a whole smorsgasboard of interests, you might say!

Debster – You’ll get free shipping for orders above 25 dollars. The two moominboks are 7 dollars each as far as I can see. There’s a hardcover of one of them for 14 dollars.
So if you pick a couple more books to get up to 25 or thereabouts then I can get them for you, I would like that.
I just started listening to Dune. It’s a big book, it’s probably going to take a long time for me to get through. But I like the scifis.

  8. Debster Says:

I’d like the Moominland in Midwinter, the Comet one and I’ll let you pick out two other Moomin books that you liked the best. I want a whole “Moominland” experience!

  9. Plume Says:

Debster – Okay, I’ll put together a Moomin collection for you!

  10. Debster Says:

Thank you! Paperback is fine with me.

PS: Don’t forget to drink plenty of water while listening to Dune! hee, hee
My husband likes the movie so much he knows the lines of the dreaded worm.

  11. Plume Says:

Debster – Keep an eye on your mailbox!
I didn’t know the worms had any lines!
Back many years ago I played a cmputer game called Dune 2 on my first PC. That’s about all I know about Dune, I have never seen the movie.
