Shelter
I kinda want to do a photo of Mia with a scarf and a caption saying “now officially launching my campaign to be the first female goat Dr Who” but I don’t have a scarf, or the energy to get one, and she’d hate wearing the scarf and also I don’t know if a scarf is still the identifying feature of the Doctor. I’m still watching the old black and white ones.

Good goat times today. Had a quick rainshower and some wind, but also a good deal of sun and pleasant temperatures. No great goat adventures today, really. Mostly just quietly and relaxing. We did have some visitors that I got to talk to a little bit (starting with the standard question. Is grandma pregnant? No really, is she pregnant?). And they had some carrots for the goats so that was nice, even though our gals are picky when it comes to carrots. I went and gathered some branches with fresh leaves outside the pen. But I managed to slip while climbing over the fence. It’s a wonder it took me almost a year before I had my first fall climbing a fence, I am so ungainly when passing the fences. Luckily I fell down with my big flabby gut right on the fence. Head over on one side, legs on the other. If I’d fallen down with my chest down on the fence I probably would have broken a rib again. For the what.. 3rd or 4th time. Haha. Now it was just a gut punch and a bruised knee. And of course I didn’t have time to feel sorry for myself because the goaties were anxiously awaiting a delivery of fresh leaves. So I had to suck it up. All in a day’s work for a scruffy looking goat herder with zero balance or grace.

It almost looks like A38 is nesting!
They put out straw there, making a good goat bed. Mio enjoyed sitting in there too. At one point she was sitting under the roof in the straw and A38 sat right on the other side of the wall. It was a cute scene, but Mio got up before I could snap a photo because she thought I was bringing treats. I can’t count how many great photos have been ruined by the goats breaking character to come looking for treats.

Had a meeting today with the doctor today regarding the new meds. Just a quick chat. We talked about the side effects and all. We’re going to be upping my dose slowly now, because what I’m taking is half the optimum dose. I just got rid of the nausea, I hope it won’t be coming back now that I’ll be taking more. But it’s okay, it was never so bad that I couldn’t take it. I’d rather just power through it if it’s temporary.
So now the dose increases and then I’ll come back and talk to her about how that’s going in a month’s time or so.
So far so good, if it keeps the darkness at bay then it’ll all be worth it.
Hmm, funny that I started talking to my new friend Jim around the time I started taking the new meds. In fact, it’s almost like he just appeared out of nowhere when I started taking them. But he’s never around when there are other people around. What’s that, Jim? Gasoline? No, I don’t have any gasoline? Buy some? Well, I don’t have a car but… right… right. Well, I guess it couldn’t hurt to have a few containers of gasoline stashed around my apartment. But you’re going to have to tell me all the details in that “plan” of yours soon, okay Jim?
Just kidding.
(See, Jim. I told them I was just kidding. They’ll believe me. It’s all good).

Good goat times today. I’m glad I got going despite the aching body. It’s always worth it. I was surprised to find the goats out already when I arrived. I’ve been the one letting them out recently because of people being on vacation. But nice that they were out early. I was also surprised to find something new in the goat pen. A little half-shed thing. They must have built it after I left yesterday. I’ll post a pic soon instead of trying to describe. I’m glad new things are happening, although I do wonder how much use it will get. Mio was giving it the evil eye and seemed on guard. New things, always alarming! But they’re all still spending most of the time in the horse pasture. Even though the grass is more lush in the goat pen, they prefer the short grass in the pasture. And from the pasture you can see the buildings of the playground and plus most visitors come from that side. I come that way too when I arrive in the morning. So sitting in the pasture is a good spot for keeping an eye out for humans that might be carrying food. But it’s nice with some more shelter, especially when it rains. And I think in the future it might be the plan for the goats to be confined to the goat pen. I mean they can only be in the horse pasture now because they limbo under the fence. At some point that will probably be fixed, unless I have something to say about it.
Mostly tired today, since I didn’t feel like running around much. Went and got some fresh leaves (without falling this time) and watched the goats devour them. And we had some visitors who enjoyed petting teh goats. Not too bad.

Here are the new digs. I brought the leaves I’d gathered there to get the goats to go to it. And even then, Mio didn’t eat the leaves and limboed out of the goat pen after a minute. I’m sure she’ll get used to it, though! I can totes see A38 chilling in there when it rains.

Can you tell Mio’s face is dirty? For some reason she started rubbing her face against the ground. Instead of pawing the ground with her hooves before sitting down she was doing it with her horns, getting her face all dirtied up.

Good goat times today. Quite warm but humid too. Forecast said rain, but it didn’t come while I was out. I was first one there so I let the goats out in the morning. Giving A38 some alone time with breakfast while the big girls fought over the food bucket inside. I found a new change in the goat pen. The new shelter had a tarp added over it, to protect from the rain. But also some changes in the fencing. The first thing I saw was that the passage from the goat pen to the pasture up by the door was blocked off completely. No more passing through there. Then I went down to the passage next to the bench to see if that had been blocked off too. At first I thought it had, but when I got a closer look I saw that there was a gap. They have removed the board that the goats used to limbo under. Now there’s a nice, little goat-sized gap that the goats can go through. And there’s a bit of movable fencing that can be slid closed if the goats have to stay in the goat pen. So that’s pretty great actually. My first thought when I saw the changes was “Oh no, they messed it all up and now we can’t go in the pasture anymore”. But no, it’s actually easier now. And no more limboing. Which is the reason why this was done really. While the limboing under the fence was cute, it started wearing off the fur off especially Mia’s back. She actually has a naked spot on the back now. And mio was starting to get it too. So, this is much better. We can go back and forth as we want and the goaties don’t hurt their backs. Very good. I just hope we get to keep that new gap even when the horses come back.
Lots of lazying around today in the humid heat. The kind of day you just want to sit and watch the goats chew their cud.
There’s a little more to tell about today, but I’ll save that for later because I need to get food in my mouth hole.

Here’s a quick look at the aforementioned changes in the goat pen. On top is the newly blocked passage. That’s where it gets super muddy in winter so the goats won’t miss that, as long as we get to keep the other passage. Which is being modelled by A38 in the bottom pic. There’s a nice square gap that the goats can fit through with ease. And then there’s some meshing that is not fixed so that can be moved over to cover the gap if the goats need to stay in the goat pen. So far so good.

Okay, here’s the followup to the good goat times.
I almost thought I was going to have to put the goats back in when I was about to leave, because Anne was late today. I don’t want to leave them outside if the place is closed and I don’t know when or if anyone will show up.
But Anne did show up. And I had a nice little chat with her. it turns out she’s the one who’s been doing all the new stuff in the goat pen. The new shelter and the fence work. She’s been busy! Making it all from old pallets and old wood that was lying around. And hurrying to get the goat shelter made so it could be ready for today’s rain. how nice of her. She also asked me how I thought the girls were doing “since you know them best”. I appreciated that too. She seems to care about their well being, which is good of course. She’s been keeping them out late too, since they’ve been let out later due to vacation recently. One day they got to stay outside till 9 pm, that’s quite late for them! I should have been there for that goat party.
She also came over to show me a little present that Mousy had brought her. A little, dead field mouse. Aww. That was a little sad. But that’s nature. Cat’s gotta cat. And then Anne came to show me something nicer. I forget what they’re called, but it was a little rodent thingie. About twice the size of the field mouse. But it looked mousy. Not Mousy, but mousy. Anyway, it was a super sweet little baby and Anne held it out to me so I could pet it a little. Sweetness.
We talked a little about that horses too. She told me one of the places she got the old wooden boards for the stuff she built was from when the fences got broken by the horses. When they rub their butts on the fence and then the fence snaps. Haha. I told her the same thing had happend at our old playground. And she said she thought we only had little horses there. But then i told her that Sille used to live with us there. Sille of course now lives here at the new playground too. And Anne told me that Sille was her favourite of the horses. I should have asked when they’ll be back from vacation.
Anyway, that was very nice. Anne is always nice and usually comes to say hi when she’s the one taking care of the animals and I’m there.

And here is Anne feeding Mousy. It was a little tricky getting Mousy fed, since Mia and Mio were out and wanted to steal her food. Until they realised it was cat food. Which isn’t vegetarian. But they still kept trying to chase Mousy away to check out the food bowl.
Refer back to previous post for the big Anne chat story.

Currently reading Johnny Marr’s memoirs. I became a fan of The Smiths very late, way after Morrissey went solo. So I was really more of a Morrissey fan. It’s interesting hearing the story from the other viewpoint. I am really loving his descriptions of the music and all, I can barely think of anything as ideally romantic as playing guitar and being in a band and living like that. Also loving his description of how he went vegetarian after they wrote Meat Is Murder.
Some day I’ll learn how to play that guitar I have standing in the corner and then I’ll be a rock star. You’ll see. You’ll all see. Bcause I’ll invite ya to ma gigs.
